The SR-71 Blackbird was a long-range, advanced strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed Martin in the 1960s. Known for its sleek design and remarkable speed, the SR-71 could cruise at speeds over Mach 3 and altitudes above 85,000 feet, allowing it to outrun threats like surface-to-air missiles. Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney J58 engines, the Blackbird was equipped with cutting-edge sensors and cameras for high-altitude reconnaissance, providing crucial intelligence during the Cold War without the need to penetrate hostile airspace.

In September 1974, an SR-71 set a still-standing transatlantic speed record, flying from New York to London in just 1 hour, 54 minutes, and 56 seconds. This achievement highlighted the Blackbird’s incredible speed and endurance capabilities, cementing its place in aviation history. Retired in 1998 due to the high operational costs and the advent of satellite technology, the SR-71 remains one of the fastest manned aircraft ever built and an icon of aerial engineering.

Multiple markings including transatlantic speed record aircraft 61-7972.
