USAF KC-135R Stratotanker, ca.2000s.
An icon takes flight: The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is a legendary air-to-air refuelling aircraft that has served in the U.S. Air Force for eight decades so far. Derived from the Boeing 367-80 Dash 8/B707 commercial airliner in 1956, the KC-135 revolutionised airborne refuelling capabilities. With a production run of over 800 aircraft it remains one of the most successful refuelling tankers ever built.
Enduring Legacy: The KC-135 has a long and impressive history of mid-air refuelling nearly every type of USAF aircraft. Throughout its long career the KC-135 has undergone numerous upgrades to engines and avionics. The KC-135R with CFM F108 engines introduced in the late 1990s marked a significant upgrade in what has become one of the final iterations of this iconic family.
Passing the Torch: The USAF is transitioning to the next-generation KC-46 Pegasus while strategically phasing out older KC-135 models, with some finding a place in aviation museums.
