Developed from the US Army M47 Patton Main Battle Tank (MBT), the M48 Patton MBT was the third tank named after General George S. Patton, Commander of the US 3rd Army during World War II.
The M48 Patton was in US Army service until replaced by the M60, serving as the US Army and Marine Corps' primary battle tank in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was widely used by USA's Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries.
