Soviet Tank Transporter MAZ-537G (Late type) & MAZ/ChMZAP-5247G, mid '1970s.
The MAZ-537 is a 12-cylinder diesel-engined military artillery tractor, originally designed for loads up to 50 tons using the 2-axle low-loader trailer type ChMZAP-5247G or 3-axle ChMZAP-9990, with later versions providing a maximum load of 65 tons. It was manufactured by the Minsk Automobile Plant (from 1959 to 1965) and the Kurgan Wheel Tractor Plant from 1963 until production ceased in 1990.
The diesel engine developed 525hp, a very high output for the time and more powerful than many of the tanks it transported. Modifications to the fuel supply, cooling system and lubrication led to four different versions known as “Early”, “Intermediate”, “Late” and “Last” production types.
The MAZ/ChMZAP-5247G semi-trailer was the standard type used with the MAZ-537 truck. The trailer weighed 18 tons unladen and could transport loads up to 50 tons, gross train weight 90 tons.
